How Jorhat got its Name

Jorhat

Jorhat was the last capital of the Ahom Kingdom, as a planned town under royal patronage. Jorhat in literal meaning comes from two words "jor" means join and "hat" means market. In ancient times it was union of two famous markets "Macharhat" and "Chowkihat" which existed on the two different banks of the river Bhagdoi.
